Ambivert Light

Design Future - Moving Forward

Design Strategy

The Ambivert Light is the first in a series of lamps designed to reflect the duality of human personality. It offers a personalised design by representing the introverted and extroverted aspects within us all. This lamp, with its exposed and hidden design elements, visually embodies the idea that people have both a public-facing self and a more private, concealed one. The Ambivert Light sets the stage for a collection of pieces that will explore this theme further, each lamp in the series revealing different facets of the human condition through its unique construction and aesthetic.

Light Refraction Perspex

The form of the lamp is a playful juxtaposition of solid and ethereal elements. A robust, cast-molded ceramic base provides a strong foundation, grounding the piece with its substantial and earthy presence. Rising from this base is a series of meticulously crafted perspex layers, which form the lamp's shade. These are held in place by slender brass bars and separated by 1 cm brass cylinders, giving the layers a beautiful, floating appearance. This design allows the light source to peek through the layers. The materiality celebrates the contrast between the ceramic's matte, tactile finish and the smooth, light-refracting quality of the perspex. The polished brass accents serve as elegant connectors, their metallic warmth providing a sophisticated counterpoint to the other materials. For color, the lamp offers a spectrum of possibilities, allowing for a truly personal expression.

Moving Forward

Moving forward, I'd like to reimagine this lamp as a dynamic, interactive object that puts the user in the designer's seat. The next evolution of this design will be a build-your-own light puzzle, replacing the fixed structure with a series of interlocking perspex shapes. This new approach transforms the lampshade from a static form into a personalized creation, allowing each individual to snap, slide, and arrange the pieces to their liking. Whether they prefer a tidy, geometric stack or a chaotic, expressive cascade, the lamp becomes a playful extension of their personality. This not only makes the design more sustainable through its flat-pack nature but also deepens the user's connection to their lamp—it’s not just a fixture, but a continuously evolving sculpture of light.
